Although it allows you to earn more commission as your downline goes deeper, there are a lot of considerations that you’ll need to note in this company.
Reading this review will not only help you make a better decision but will save you time, effort, and money in swiftly signing-up without doing a background check.
Recommendation: Yes, if you do not mind the challenges of running an MLM business
What is doTERRA?
Founded by David Stirling in 2008, doTERRA is a Utah-based MLM company that focuses on promoting health and wellness by selling therapeutic grade essential oils. Its name comes from Latin and simply means – Gift of the Earth.
Its major competitor is Young Living, which also an MLM company that sells essentials oils. But what is more interesting is that doTerra founder is actually a former distributor of the Young Living!
Like many other MLM businesses, doTERRA aims to help people earn multiple-tier income by promoting their products.
If it’s your first time to hear about MLM, it is a legitimate business that offers members a multi-tier income opportunity.
There’s a very thin line between MLM and a pyramid scheme, which is why MLM is often mistaken as one.
However, while MLM focuses on promoting products to earn a commission, a pyramid scheme does more about recruiting new members to receive monetary incentives.
In most cases, it’s hard to tell whether a company engages in a pyramiding scheme because it uses products to conceal its true identity. If you want to learn more about what is a pyramid scheme, please fee to check out the FDC explanation about pyramid scheme.
Meanwhile, if you are ready to know whether doTERRA offers a better income opportunity than its essential oil counterparts, let me take you inside doTERRA and learn how you can make money with this company.
Most Popular doTERRA Products
doTERRA started as an essential oil company until it has expanded into other product lines such as personal care products, supplements, and weight loss products.
However, the most popular products of doTERRA are mainly its essential oils which include both single oils and proprietary blends.
The bestselling essential oil is the Copaiba Essential oil, which is rich in anti-oxidant that helps support cardiovascular health and boost the immune system.
A 15ml bottle of Copaiba costs $46.67 but you can get it at $35.00 only if you are a doTERRA distributor.
To use it, you can simply dilute two drops of the oil in four ounces of water and drink it for a healthier body.
How to Make Money with doTERRA
In order to start earning money with doTERRA, first, you need to become Wellness Advocate (or simply known as a member) by paying a $35 registration fee.
Once you become a doTERRA Wellness Advocate, you can start selling its products and recruiting people to unlock commissions and bonuses.
However, in order to stay as an active member, doTERRA requires you to spend at least $100 on the company’s product every month.
doTERRA follows the traditional recruitment system, where in addition to retail profits, you also need to recruit people to become your downline in order to advance in rank and earn an over-riding commission.
As you can see, there are 12 rankings in doTERRA with Wellness Advocate as the lowest and Presidential Diamond as the highest.
Basically, doTERRA follows a Unilevel compensation plan which lets you earn a commission from the retail sales made by your downline and pays you 7 levels deep.
It is the simplest, most straightforward compensation plan which can be very attractive to new recruits.
There are four ways you can generate money with doTERRA, which I will explain to you in the next section.
Once you become a doTERRA member, you can purchase their products at their wholesale price. Your profit will be the difference between what you pay for the products and what you charged with your customers.
For example, if you buy the Copaiba Essential Oil at $35.00 and you sell it at $46.65, then you get $11.65 as profit, which is fairly reasonable especially for inexperience MLM distributors.
However, I can’t say that this is the easiest method to earn money with doTERRA unless you are able to leverage useful affiliate marketing strategies to reach a wider customer base by promoting products online.
If you are just taking the traditional way of selling products asking your friends and relatives to go online and buy, you might not earn enough money to quit your job.
In addition to earning retail profits, you will also earn a 25% bonus on your retail revenue. For instance, if you have $100 retail sales amount, doTERRA will give your $25 at the end of the month.
Fast Start Bonus
This is a multi-tier bonus paid to new doTERRA members on their personal volume (PV) if they are able to accumulate up to 100 PV Loyalty Rewards within the first 60 days since they have signed up.
You will earn 20% on your first level downline, 10% on your second level, and 5% on your third level. If you can persistently recruit members and expand three levels deep within 60 days, you will get all of these commissions.
Power of Three Bonus
Additional cash bonuses will be given to you and/your downlines who successfully recruit three levels of downline. You will earn $50 if you can recruit 3 downlines, $250 if your downlines can recruit three members each, and $1,500 if your second downline recruits another three members each, for a total of 27 members.
In order to be qualified for the Power of Three Bonus, your team must maintain 600 team volume which you can earn by purchasing doTERRA products.
You will earn a multi-tier percentage of your downlines’ overrides down 7 levels deep. This is where your passive income comes in because this bonus is dependent on the sales that your downlines make and not yours.
In a Unilevel plan, you will have unlimited width and able to build a stronger and deeper network. This type of MLM plan is suitable for both small or big organizations.
With unlimited width, this also indicates that you might be tempted to constantly recruit people to join your frontline to earn a higher income.
Who is doTERRA for?
doTERRA is best for people who believe in the power of essential oils, have good sales technique and do not mind to spend additional time earning a part-time income.
But if you are thinking to make doTERRA business your full-time earning, then you must first be able to self-motivate and can persist with constantly promoting and recruiting new members.
Only by recruiting more active members as downlines, you're able to earn passive income as you reach the leader rank.
The success rate of MLM business is highly dependent on consistency and devotion to exert considerable effort in selling products and answering questions such as “why should I join your team and not the other?”
Eventually, many people get tired of dealing with new faces every day to finally get stuck at a certain level or give up entirely on this business.
Unless you are determined to commit long-term selling products and recruiting people, otherwise it's better to refrain from joining any MLM business – this includes doTERRA.
The Truth About doTERRA
Despite doTERRA does offer a legit business opportunity, there’re certain things you must be aware of if you’re considering to join this business.
Truth #1: Product Lacks Accreditation
doTERRA develops its own testing process called CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade to prove to customers that their essential oils are natural.
However, the CPTG Quality Testing process is only an internal process and results can be potentially biased. Furthermore, this process was never accredited nor backed by any government authorities or credible associations.
The sad thing is that when you become a doTERRA distributor, you would be convinced to trust this claim in order to attract prospective buyers.
Truth #2: Negative Feedback from Customers
Although doTERRA is BBB-registered, there have been a lot of negative reviews about its customer service, which can be discouraging.
The problem with having negative reviews is that it overshadows positive feedback, which makes selling doTERRA products a tough job.
Truth #3: FDA Warning About Its Essential Oils
Since recruiting is the lifeblood of doTERRA, members tend to exaggerate the effectiveness of its products in order to lure people to make a purchase.
In 2014, doTERRA has received a warning letter from US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), after its members marketed the products as a possible treatment for diseases that are not acquiescent to self-diagnoses such as brain injury, cancer, autism, and Ebola virus.
Just so you know, doTERRA products are not FDA approved and they have no proven therapeutic claims, so you should restrain advertising its products as if they are powerful drugs that can cure diseases.
Truth #4: Misleading Earning Disclosure
At first glance on the doTERRA’s Income Disclosure Statement, I was surprised to see, 62% of the people have average annual earnings of $27,557?!
Apparently, doTERRA only showed the income disclosure of its top leaders, starting from those who have reached the Silver rank up to the Presidential Diamond. There is no way to tell whether those who belong at the bottom have earned at all.
Moreover, Silver is the 8th ranking in doTERRA, which means that you still have to stretch a lot of bones in order to have a stable income with this company.
Considering the massive effort that you need to invest in MLM business, I bet you’ll get tired before even reaching this level.
Things I Like About doTERRA
The fact that doTERRA is accredited by Better Business Bureau (BBB) in 2017 with A+ rating is one of the few things I like about this company.
Also, I always believe in the healing power of plants, which are the main ingredients in doTERRA essentials oils. Due to the rising trend of health and wellness products, many people will potentially become attracted to its products.
However, I still do not recommend joining doTERRA. The problem with this type of niche, it is selling a wide range of products and essential oils are just a small part.
Moreover, the multi-tier commission business model is a complicated structure that will lure you to the complicated cycle of recruiting people in order to unlock more bonuses and earn a commission.
This tempts you to focus on the money-making opportunity, which is the main essence of the pyramiding scheme, instead of focusing on selling products.
Can doTERRA Offer A Better Income Opportunity?
However, it has a more affordable sign-up fee which makes it better for newbies who are seeking business opportunities with small startup capital.
Despite doTERRA might offers better income opportunities compared to similar MLM companies, I still would not recommend you to join this company.
You can only make a limited amount of money by retailing but to earn a full-time income, you’ll need to persistently meet new people and recruit them in order to move up the rank and earn much bigger bonuses.
If you want to take advantage of the multi-tier income opportunity that MLM companies offer, I suggest you promote multiple companies using affiliate marketing method and teach your downlines to do the same.
This way you don’t have to exert enormous effort selling products and recruiting people. What you need is just a great marketing strategy that can help you promote products online.
How I Start A Small Business Online
I used to do MLM for a short time but the need to invest enormous effort in order to earn a decent income made me quit.
That’s how I ended up starting a small business online promoting affiliate products, which is much simpler than making money through MLM.
Unlike MLM, affiliate marketing does not restrict you to a single brand. It allows you to explore and promote multiple products through your website, which lets you earn a residual income.
If you too prefer a simpler way to earn a full-time income from home, I suggest you get a copy of my free guide and follow through the process that I took to make this work for me.
