What is Optavia?

Founded by Dr. Wayne S. Andersen & Bradley T. Macdonald, Optaviais a popular MLM company that sells science-based products, mainly as part of their weight loss program.

It was first known as “Take Shape For Life”, which was created in 2002. In 2017, Optavia was launched as an independent company but both companies are owned by Medifast, their parent company which was started in the 1980s.

Like many MLM business such as Usana, Rodan+Fields, Neways (now known as Modere) and Essante Organics, Optavia offers to help people make money through retail sales and commission structure.

If this is your first time to hear about MLM, it is a legitimate business opportunity that offers members multi-tier income opportunity.

One very distinct characteristic of an MLM is that people can earn money by selling products and recruiting downline. Both must be available to form a legit MLM business.

MLM is often mistaken as a pyramid scheme due to frequent information misrepresentation during recruitment, including inappropriate activities conducted by members such as inventory loading.

In a pyramid scheme, members focus more on recruiting people than selling products, which defeats the purpose of having real products as a value-added function of a business.

In many cases, companies use products just to hide their pyramiding scheme and new members are convinced to recruit people as the fundamental method to earn money.

If you want to know more about pyramid scheme, do check out the FDC explanation about pyramid scheme.

Moving forward with Optavia, I believe that it’s quite a good brand. The fact that it came from a reputable company Medifast makes it impressive.

However, is it possible to drive sales by leveraging its legendary image as a reputable weigh tloss company? Would it be worth to partake a portion of your hard-earned money to invest in this company?

That is what we’re going to find out in the next section.

Inside Optavia

Optavia claims as a popular weigh tloss MLM company that sells a line of food products called “Fuelings”, which are available as kits or as individual items.

The term fueling is used by the company to describe meal replacements.

Optavia has more than 60 choices of meal replacements, which are claimed to be protein-rich, high in fiber, organic, gluten-free, and non-GMO.

Optavia’s Most Popular Weightloss Product

The most popular product of Optavia is the Optimal Weight 5&1 Plan which claims to help you burn fat efficiently without losing muscle mass.

The Optimal Weight 5&1 Plan approximately costs $414.60 which contains 119 servings per container. It comes with a free Optavia blender and a bundle of 16 food packs, snacks, and shakes which you need to use as a substitute for your regular food.

The idea is to eat six small, that totaled 800 to 1,000 calorie meals per day with healthy snacks in between to lose weight naturally.

Other popular products of Optavia are the Essential On-The-Go 5&1 Kit and the Essential Optimal 4&2&1 Kit. The former costs $414.60 while the latter is $408.00.

It’s a little expensive compared to other MLM companies, but I will tell you exactly later on the following sections why the products may be worth a try lest the fact that their snack bars and chocolate shakes look so mouthwatering.

Meanwhile, I know most of you are excited to take a sneak peak on how you can make money with Optavia. So here we go.

How to Make Money with Optavia

I dread about writing compensation plans from different MLM companies as it's normally quite complicated.

However, Optavia has a pretty unique compensation plan compared to other ordinary MLM companies.

Normally, a typical MLM business would give discounts to its distributors and commissions to those who are able to enroll new members. Optavia doesn’t have any of these.

To start earning money with Optavia, you need to purchase the Health Coach Business Kit at $199, which includes basic training and marketing materials to help you get started.

As a newbie, this is quite an expensive investment but once you’ve purchased the starter kit, you’ll eventually become one of Optavia’s Health Coach.

When you become an Optavia Health Coach, you won’t receive any discount for any of their products. The price is the same for you and other coaches. You won’t also receive any commission for every member you recruit to join your downline.

So how do you earn money with Optavia?

The process of making money with Optavia is very interesting and I want you to read this very carefully. In general, Optavia offers a lot of bonuses which is strategically spread into three categories:

  1. Health Coach Income
  2. Business Coach Income
  3. Business Leader Income

Health Coach Income: Being a health coach is a starting rank in Optavia. As a health coach, you’re eligible to earn two types of bonuses: Client Acquisition Bonus (CAB) and Client Support Bonus (SPB).

The Client Acquisition Bonus is a one-time bonus worth $100 when you develop at least 5 new frontline clients and generate 1,000 Frontline Qualifying Volume (FQV) within your first 30 days.

The client support bonus is a multi-tiered income opportunity given every month where you can earn 31% if you can reach the 6000 Frontline Volume (FLV) as shown in the table below:

Business Coach Income: You will only be eligible to this income if you become a senior coach, which requires 1,200 group volume and five ordering entities. The senior coach is the rank next to a health coach.

Business coach income includes three types of bonuses: Assist Bonus, Team Growth Bonuses, and Fully Integrated Business Coach (FIBC).

You will get your Assist Bonus which is $100 if you help your downline make their first $100 of CAB. As I mentioned above, CAB is a one-time, big-time bonus that a new member can earn if he or she develops 5 frontlines for the first 30 days.

You will earn your Team Growth Bonus which is 4% to 12% of the frontline volume if you help your downline advance in rank. The higher rank you get them, the higher bonus you’ll get.

The Fully Integrated Business Coach Bonus (FIBC) is equivalent to $1000 which will be given to you every rolling three months only if you generate 6,000 frontline volumes.

The key is to mentor your downline and help them make sales so you will reach the required personal volume and group volume to be eligible for bonuses.

Up to this stage, I believe some of you might be confused about the complicated MLM compensation plan offered by Optavia.

Nothing wrong with this as many people face such a problem as well. However, since Optavia is a reputable MLM business, I believe their compensation plan should be legitimate as well.

However, if you prefer an alternative method to earn a decent income at home with simpler commission scheme, then I suggest you try out My #1 Recommendation.

Now, let’s continue with more of their compensation plan.

Business Leader Income: The Business Leader Income is the third level income you can earn from Optavia and is only available after you become a Regional Director. To become a Regional Director, you need to have at least 1 Executive Director with 1 Executive Director Team.

The Regional Director is 8th in rank which is very hard to achieve. I bet only a few people have really reached to this level and earned their much desired bonuses.

The business leader income is between 1.5% to 2.5% of the Executive’s Director’s group volume down to the next generation’s executive director. The following table shows you the percentage you can get per rank level.

Elite Leadership Bonus: The Elite Leadership Bonus is only available once you become a National Director, which is 0.05% on your entire business down to the second National Director in the team.

At this point, the process just gets harder wherein you would constantly find yourself selling products while helping your team generate sales as well.

If you’re interested to learn more about Optavia’s compensation plan, feel free to check it out here.

This company may not require a lot of recruiting but its commission structure pressures you into the vicious cycle of selling products face-to-face and coaching people from all walks of life.

It can be very tiring and time-consuming to continuously coach newcomers to later find them quitting one-by-one when can’t take the stress of selling.

Only the strongest will survive in such a challenging environment, and we know there’s hardly a few.

In the end, you will find it easier to give up than to push through with this business.

CONFUSED OF MLM?
Here's A Simpler Way To Earn A Full-Time Income Working From Home

Who is Optavia For?

Optavia is best for health-conscious people who have a lot of perseverance to sell science-based products and mentoring new members for sales growth.

MLM business might be appealing to people who find hopes in their promises for a better life – financial freedom and unlimited supply of small ornaments, bonuses, and other benefits of little value.

But MLM takes a lot of effort and hard work to nurture new members and help them generate sales so you can earn more commission.

In other words, the opportunity to get rich with MLM is unlimited but at the same time highly challenging and stressful.

Unless you’re a self-motivated person, an excellent team-builder, hardworking and resilient, otherwise MLM is not for you.

On top of that, you must be a person who enjoys meeting new people every day and would not be easily knocked down by rejections one after another.

If you’re such a person, then MLM is for you.

The Truth About Optavia

Truth #1: Inventory Loading is Possible

Although this company steers clear from the term recruitment, it can potentially influence you to engage in inventory loading.

In the compensation plan, I’ve explained that your eligibility to earn commission depends on the sales generated by your downline. The more sales they generate, the bigger commission you’ll get.

But what if your downline don’t make any sales at all? What if you don’t make sales at all?

Eventually, you’ll be tempted to buy a large quantity of inventory which cannot be resold within a reasonable amount of time just to reach the frontline volume requirements and to qualify for commissions and bonuses.

For those of you who’re not familiar with MLM, inventory loading is, in fact, one activity that can cause a company to be considered as a Pyramid Scheme.

Despite Optavia discourages members from involving in such activity, it can’t prevent members from doing so.

Truth #2: Health Coach Without Professional Training

In my opinion, it is not appropriate to call someone a “Health Coach” who is none other than a simple distributor.

As I wrote earlier, anyone who joins Optavia eventually becomes a Health Coach regardless of what pre-qualification that the person has.

Without certification, I am doubtful that you can rely fully on their health advice.

For me, it’s always safer to trust a health professional than someone with no formal health training and proper certification.

Truth #3: More Distributors Who Didn't Make It

Like many MLM companies, there are more distributors who didn't manage to earn full-time income than those who make it to a decent rank.

Both Optavia’s 2017 and 2018 income disclosure show that 60%, which is the largest percentage of their members earn an income of not more than $250 to $600 annually.

It's not even enough for anyone to pay bills, let alone be called a full-time income. Not to mention that a significant of 30% members are not earning a single cent from this system, and this number is increasing every year.

Without a doubt, it’s getting more difficult to earn money from MLM business. Obviously, the earning results that reduces over the years making it even riskier to invest.

Things I Like About Optavia

Optavia offers a much better compensation plan which is one of the few things I like about this company.

A lot of compensation plan from different MLM companies focus on recruiting new members but Optavia makes its coaches focus more on selling products to gain commission instead of going down to the vicious cycle of recruiting people.

Furthermore, Optavia is a subsidiary of Medifast which has a solid company background being a publicly-traded company specializing in weight loss since 1980.

It has an A+ rating in Better Business Bureau which gives Optavia an impressive level of credibility most especially for MLM newbies.

Although there are many things I like about Optavia, I still do not recommend putting your money into this type of business.

It is an inherent problem with MLM business that many members can’t make a decent income, thanks to its saturated market and the bad image associated with MLM.

With such challenging nature of this industry, it poses more difficulty to truly earn a full-time living with an MLM business.

Is Optavia a Scam?

Optavia is definitely not a scam.  It is a legitimate MLM company that is a subsidiary of another reputable company called Medifast.

However, while you may be intrigued by the enticing opportunity to make money, there are only a few people who have gotten rich with MLM business.

If you want to earn money from home without going through the hassles of selling product, I recommend that you promote products from multiple MLM companies using affiliate marketing methods.

This way, you still earn an overriding commission but won’t be tied up with only one MLM company.

MLM requires you to sell face-to-face to people who are highly potential to end up rejecting your offer, which can be very de-motivating.

As opposed with MLM, affiliate marketing doesn’t place you at risk for outright rejection since it doesn’t involve face-to-face selling.

How I Start a Small Business Online

I used to do MLM for a short term but the need to spend enormous effort overtime makes it so difficult to sustain. It’s more demotivating to realize that the return was not as much as promised.

So, decided to quit and start a small business online promoting affiliate products, which has proven to be a better and simpler way to earn a decent income.

In contrast with MLM, affiliate marketing doesn’t require face-to-face interaction and massive effort to recruit & nurture downlines.

That’s the reasons why you can sleep soundly at night while your passive income keeps coming into your bank account.

If you want to learn the exact method I use to earn a full-time affiliate commission from home, do get my free guide and follow through the process.

  1. My personal experience with MLM leads me to the opinion that they’re all just a pyramid scheme with some products added in. That may not be the intention of these companies when they set up their system but I know so many MLM people who are entirely focused in recruitment and don’t bother trying to sell the product. Should be made illegal in my honest opinion.

  2. Hi Florence, I’ve been following your blog for quite some time. You indeed gave a very good feedback on each product that you’ve reviewed so far. Love those unbiased reviews. Btw, I realized that it’s possible to select a few good MLM products and promote using affiliate marketing method. Do you know how I can start?

    1. Of course you can. I started my affiliate marketing business with Wealthy Affiliate. You might want to consider giving it a try. Here’s a review about Wealthy Affiliate that I’ve written after using this platform for some years to build my business. Hope it can help you too.

  3. Food and weight loss products are a hot subject in MLM. Such programs will for sure attract a lot of interested individuals. However, I think 30 days is too little time to achieve qualifying sales volume. Don’t think any newcomer can easily achieve within such a short period.

Seriously, I don’t think this MLM is the ideal business model. At least not for introverts and people who can’t get used to face-to-face selling, especially when you sometimes might need to pester your closest ones to buy. I am not sure about others, but MLM is definitely not for me.

  4. As I kept on reading your review, the more I am convinced that this type of business is not for me. First of all I am not really good with selling products. In fact, the only experience I had was during high school when we had to do a group business project in our Entrepreneurship subject. Selling is not my strong ability. I am pretty sure it will be hard for me to meet Opatavia’s target to get the bonuses they provide. It takes full time monitoring of the business to move into a higher level which in my capacity would just probably become stagnant. I guess there are different type of business for different skills to work out.

No doubt that Optavia products are considerably good, the problem goes back again to selling. There are other similar companies who sells the same product at a lower cost but has proven effective. People are really smart in choosing what to purchase and would always consider the price. It’s one aspect that Opatavia should look out for. It’s hard to sell something with aloyt of good competition.  Thanks for covering an in depth review about this MLM company. Appreciate the information.
