What is Swagbucks (Scam or Legit?)

Swagbucks is a web-based reward program where you can earn rewards not only by doing survey but also other activities you do daily.

Every time you complete each activity, you can earn reward points called SB.

With A-rating by Better Business Bureau (BBB), Swagbucks is one of the largest online rewards program that has paid members more than $300 million handing out over 7,000 free gift cards every day.

Its legitimacy is never a question.

Here's how Swagbucks works.

How to Earn Money with Swagbucks?

There are 9 different activities to earn SB through Swagbucks with minimum earning for each action is 1 SB. Every SB is worth $0.01. Some activities can pay up to 4000 SBs which are worth $40.

Get Paid Doing Surveys

If you like to do survey, Swagbucks has plenty for you to choose from.

However, in order to qualify for each survey, you need to pass the screener. This means, you can also fill out half of the survey to later find out that you are not qualified.

Each completed survey varies in payout and length. Most take between three and fifteen minutes, but some are as long as thirty minutes.

If you have extra time and are not concern about disqualification, you should consider to take longer surveys so you can earn more.

Choose one that has higher payout compared to the others if they are of the same length of time.

Watch Videos

Swagbucks Swag TV videos let you watch themed videos on topics about current news, sports, fashion and editor’s picks. To earn up to 6 SBs per set, you usually have to watch between two and twenty videos.

Time is money so only watch the shortest Swag TV collections so you can spend the rest of your time doing other more lucrative options.

Play Games

If you like to play games, then Swagbucks is an option to get paid while playing free games. For paid games, you need to buy coins to earn points.

Some of the more popular games include Bejeweled 2, Wheel of Fortune, Solitaire and Trivial Pursuit.

Get Paid to Shop

Swagbucks shopping experience is very similar to cashback portal like Ebates. You earn rewards points after each purchase from your favourite online stores.

This is lucrative. You can earn up to 40% cash back at almost any online store. You will also receive in-store cash back when you link your credit card to Swagbucks app.

Some stores participating in this cashback include Amazon, Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, Hotels.com and many more.

Print Grocery Coupons

If you want to save money, printing grocery coupons from Coupons.com not only let you buy you favourite product at discounted price but also earn you 10 Swagbucks points for each redeemed coupon.

Sometimes, Swagbucks offers more reward points for each redeemed coupon. For example, you might get 25 points instead of the usual 10-point for a limited time.

Try New Products or Services

Swagbucks will also pay you for trying new products or services. For instance, you might get 100 SBs for trying a service like Personal Capital for 30 days.

Despite some are free, many of these services and products may cost you money if you exceeded the free trial period.

Always read the fine print and keep track of the products and services you try so you can cancel those you are not keen to purchase before your credit card is charged.

Search the Web

There are two ways to make money surfing the web through Swagbucks:

Using the Swagbucks.com search bar

Making Swagbucks your default browser search engine

Some frequent Swagbucks users earn between 15 and 20 SBs each day because they perform several web searches a day.

This method to earn SB is most suited if you do a lot of web research. I mean you won’t need to allocate additional time to use the web because not all searches are entitled to points.

The easiest way is to add the Swagbucks extension to your web browser.

Instead of going to Google, type your search keywords into the Swagbucks search engine instead.

Swagbucks will credit your searches and shopping purchases through its web.

Complete Online Micro Tasks

You too can earn money on Swagbucks when complete various online tasks. Each will take more time to complete, and can be more complex than doing a survey.

Most of these tasks such as transcription or data entry require a computer to complete.

The more complex the task is, the higher SB you will earn.

If you’re looking for a quick buck, these might not be suitable for you. However, it can be more rewarding than doing other simpler Swagbucks tasks.

Referring Others to Swagbucks

Swagbucks is a very good reward program and I think you should share with your friends.

When they sign up for Swagbucks with your affiliate link, you’ll get paid.

For each signed up and active referral, you’ll get 300 points or $3 sign-up bonus when you meet its terms and conditions.

Referring others to sign up can be a good way to earn SB points. It can result in some true passive income.

What is Swagbucks Monthly Bonus?

Every Swagbucks member has an individual daily goal that rewards you with a bonus if you achieve it.

You can find your daily goal meter, in the main toolbar, at the top of every Swagbucks page.

On a computer, the daily goal meter button will display “Daily Goal”

For your first two weeks on Swagbucks, or your first two weeks after a lengthy break, your daily goal will be around 40 SBs. After your first two weeks of earning regularly, the goal will increase to around 100 SBs.

There are two reasons to hit your daily goal.

  • Each day that you hit your daily goal, you’ll earn a bonus. The daily goal bonus is usually around 10% of the goal itself.
  • In addition, every day that you hit your daily goal contributes towards a Streak which could earn you an even bigger bonus!

Here’s the Streak you will get for reaching your daily goals consistently with a maximum of 300 SBs bonus for a month.

  • 7 days – 25 SB Bonus.
  • 14 days – 100 SB Bonus.
  • 21 days – 200 SB Bonus.
  • 28 days – 200 SB Bonus, but both 7 day & 21 days will be lit up.
  • Every day (Monthly Master) – 300 SB Bonus

SB earned from most activities add to the daily goals except those earned through referral activity.

If you continuously achieve your daily goals, by the time it reaches one full month, you would have accumulate to more than 600 SBs.

On top of the daily goals that can give you monthly bonus, there is one limited-time bonus called Swago open to every Swagbucks member. Swago contest runs for a few days, and it’s a race to complete the entire board.

There are 25 activities to complete on a Swago board that looks similar to a Bingo board. After completing a pattern of activities, you earn bonus points plus spins on the prize wheel.

Swagbucks Monthly Bonus

With only so little money you can earn participating in these contest (less than $100), I wouldn't recommend you spend time on this.

Seriously, with the amount of time spent, it would be better to do other things can give you more hourly pay than doing simple yet time consuming tasks inside Swagbucks.

How to Get Paid?

After you get a certain number of points on Swagbucks, you can visit the Swagbucks reward store and exchange your points from these options.

  • You can get a deposit into your PayPal account
  • Exchange for gift cards you can choose from
  • Exchange SBs to enter into sweepstakes they hold
  • Donate to charitable organizations

I suggest you wait until you have accumulated a large amount of SB so you have options to optimize value each SB. For instance, it costs 500 SB for a $5 cash out, but only 2200 SB for a $25 Amazon gift card.

Who Can Join Swagbucks?

Swagbucks is 100% free to join and use. Anyone 13 years or older can join Swagbucks.

However Swagbucks currently is only available in United States, Germany, Ireland, France, Australia, Canada, Spain, Portugal, UK, New Zealand and India.

Good Things About Swagbucks

One thing I like about Swagbucks is the extra bonuses you can earn when you consistently do activity. That’s like double points with single effort!

Despite Swagbucks earning is not much compared to other income opportunities, for instance promoting affiliate products or self-publish ebook, Swagbucks is still a very convenient way to earn extra bucks when you are free.

Because it’s so easy to earn, you can easily work the site in your spare time. You can earn SBs while you’re watching TV, waiting for a meeting or just have a half hour with nothing to do.

Swagbucks is also a great way for teens to earn some extra cash. That being said, there are some downsides to this reward program, in my humble opinion.

Things I Don't Like

The fact of the matter is you don’t get paid very much for the activities you complete on the site unless if you’re buying something – average value cashback is 40% of purchase price.

But that’s kind of defeat the purpose.

When you search for opportunities to earn extra income, your purpose is to MAKE money, not spend money. So yes, you may have earned $5 on the $50 item, but you spend $45 to get it!

Unless you are a disciplined person and focus to earn from Swagbucks, otherwise you might end up buying more things that you don’t need.

Similar to other other survey companies like SurveySpot or Survey Club., there is also negative comment on Swagbucks survey that you can find on the web.

Many people try to make money with the Swagbucks surveys, but they can’t seem to get easy money as most will not qualify to complete full survey.

What was advertised on Swagbucks is confusing. Members were given the impressions that they can get tons of survey opportunities but most returned with disappointments.

Some members were even banned from doing activities in Swagbucks with no explanation given by the website.

Downside about Swagbucks

Despite some negative comments made by members, there is no question on legitimacy of Swagbucks. Being in the industry for 13 years, this program is legit and truly pays you.

But would you spend your time earning pennies when you can earn more?

Is it Worth To Join Swagbucks?

Well, it is very hard to determine whether Swagbucks is worth to join. It all depends on what you really want to achieve.

If you are a relaxed person and just want to spend free time doing something that can give you extra cash or reward points, then Swagbucks is great for you.

But this reward program won’t help you retire early, neither can it help to quit your day job.

The hourly wage you get paid for completing activities on Swagbucks will not be more than the pay you get from doing a part-time job, if you have one now.

You do get paid a little bit just for trying, but again, the hourly wage when you calculate it is too low.

If your goal is to earn real income so you could quit your 9 to 5 job, you’re better off staying with some other options.

Alternative Ways to Make Money Online

If you really want to make real money online, then these are better alternatives compared to Swagbucks.

  1. Freelance with Upwork (creatives, writing, social media, website, etc)
  2. Writer for Textbroker (great for beginner)
  3. Create professional looking ebook with Sqribble and sell on Kindle
  4. Promote Motor Club of America
  5. Write for Listverse (if you are excellent in doing research and write)

Despite there are so many proven ways to earn real income, there is one particular method that is proven workable by many marketers.

You don’t need to own any products neither do you need to have a lot of money to start with. The good news is even a complete newbie can do.

All you need is a computer with an internet connection (so you can work from pretty much anywhere!) including step-by-step guidance

You can get my free guide to start one now.

  1. Thanks for the review and recommendation. The program is not bad but like you said just like most other survey sites it does not pay much. It is not what you can really depend on to make a good amount of money. Its more of a side hustle.

I do like the idea that you won’t have to take the survey to earn some points like for instance making use of their search web. That is not a bad idea because as you are working and searching the web you can actually get paid doing it. Out of all the survey sites I have come across I think this is the first one that has that particular method.

So I would say this is not a bad recommendation and a lot of people would be interested in this. Thanks for bringing it out and making people aware of it.

  2. This is a great review on Swagbucks.  Unfortunately with my affiliate marketing business I have no time for this.  However my wife does do quite a bit when it comes to surveys and she does do Swagbucks and actually makes a bit with gift cards and so forth.  She puts in several hours some days and not so many on other days.  She has never had a problem getting the rewards she has earned.

  3. Thank you for the Swagbucks review. I think Swagbucks is a good way to make some extra cash doing your regular stuff. As I have seen from your review, Swagbucks has numerous ways with which the members can make some extra money doing regular stuff. The referral program is cool, $3 per active referral. Cool.

    1. Yes, I believe referral is easier and takes little effort to get friends joining. But again, as I mentioned, Swagbucks can’t replace your part-time income if you have one now.

  4. Hello Florence. You have done excellent in this review. Keep it going. Well, I think Swagbucks is great for those with so much extra time. Personally, I dislike surveys. I don’t think this kinda stuff is suitable for me. I have tried many programs like this. They are time consuming. I just want to focus on building my own money making websites. 🙂
